| Taking Chongming Eco-Island, the world's largest estuarine alluvial island, as the research object, this study investigates the occurrence characteristics and ecological risks of microplastics in the soil of this region. Through sample collection, methods such as density separation, microscopic observation, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were employed to identify microplastics in the soil. The ecological risks of microplastics in Chongming Eco-Island's soil were assessed by combining the pollution load index (PLI), polymer hazard index (PHI), and potential ecological risk index (PERI). The results indicated that microplastics in Chongming soil were predominantly small-sized, with 65.38% and 22.97% of microplastics having a particle size of 0-1.0 mm and 1.0-2.0 mm, respectively. The abundance of microplastics in the soil of Changxing, Chongming, and Hengsha islands was (906.67±410.07), (455.00±348.57), and (320.00±147.87) n·kg-1 in winter and (710.00±478.50), (338.57±272.49), and (110.00±41.63) n·kg-1 in summer. The distribution of microplastics in the soil showed a clear stratification pattern, with the highest concentration found in the top 0 to 10 cm [average: (573.3±331.06) n·kg-1], followed by the 10 to 20 cm layer [(197.8±83.64) n·kg-1], and the lowest concentration in the 20 to 30 cm layer [(108.9±32.39) n·kg-1]. The soil from the three islands of Chongming had a high polymer risk level (Level IV, PHI=112.62), with both the pollution load and potential ecological risk being relatively low (PLI=2.33; PERI=34.33). The PLI and PHI indices showed a spatial trend of Changxing Island > Chongming Island > Hengsha Island. |
