| To investigate the community structure and driving factors of epilithic algae in the water source area of the Western Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, five sampling surveys were conducted at 12 typical cross-sections from July 2022 to May 2024. A total of 172 species, belonging to 60 genera and 6 phyla, were identified, with diatoms (Bacillariophyta) as the dominant group. Community structure analysis indicated no significant spatial heterogeneity but complex temporal dynamics. On an intra-annual scale, the community exhibited significant variations, mainly characterized by the seasonal succession of dominant species. On an inter-annual scale, the overall community structure (or composition) underwent significant changes. Integrated analyses (RDA, Random Forest, SEM, and Mantel) revealed a “dual-pathway” regulatory mechanism for the epilithic algal community: The total abundance (biomass) was primarily co-limited by physicochemical factors such as flow velocity (V) and pH, whereas the species composition (structure) was directly controlled by resource competition driven by nutrient dynamics, such as total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP). These findings provide fundamental data and scientific evidence for the feasibility of the water diversion, the dynamic assessment of water source health, and ecosystem conservation, holding significant implications for ecological and environmental management. |
