This paper reviewed the system components, main function,classification and other important aspects of GIS.Focuses are placed on the evolution of GIS database design model and GIS spatial data model. State-of-art GIS application in environmental sciences and engineering,including environmental management,environmental impact assessment,non point source pollution,water resources management and analysis,water supply and discharge pipeline network design and management,management and analysis of nearshore water body, environment monitoring,disaster reduction and prevention,biodiversity conservation and sustainable development research were expounded. The prospect of the GIS application was also presented. |
